Prostate Cancer Statistics
In this video, Hans Rosling briefly reviews the risk of
getting diagnosed with, and the risk of dying from, prostate cancer in
the world.
The data is compiled by IARC ( International
Agency for research on Cancer) in Lyon, France. The most striking is the high rate of
diagnosis per 100 000 men in USA and some countries in West Europe. In
contrast, Japan has a very low rate and the most probable explanation
is a genetic predisposition in men of European origin. The data is
displayed in bubbles for each country and the color of the bubbles
refers to the continent where each country is situated.
What Would You Do, Doctor?
An excellent article in the The Journal of Urology about the decision to
be screened for prostate cancer and the many treatment choises facing
each man. Keep the following points in mind:
- A large number of men die each year from prostate cancer
- Whether the death rate has decreased because of improved screening or
better treatment, the decrease is not debatable
- There is no single recommendation that fits all men
- The real governor of screening and treatment may best be
applied once a diagnosis is made
- It is impossible to adequately discuss the pros and cons of
screening with each man in advance
- Treatment or non-treatment decisions can be made once a cancer is
found, but not knowing about it in the first place surely burns bridges
